UGN Funding Supports Aging Community

ECCHO provides scooter for Mac

Ecumenical Christian Helping Hands Organization (ECCHO) is one of the 38 organizations that will benefit  from this year’s United Good Neighbors Campaign.

A non-profit organization of dedicated people who volunteer time to assist primarily elderly, disabled & low income people who often have no other means of help or support, ECHHO provides transportation to medical appointments as well as shopping trips and errands. Also offered to clients are free loans of medical equipment such as wheel chairs, walkers, commodes, lift chairs, scooters, and hospital beds. ECHHO also offers occasional household chores as well as social support including friendly visits and outings for shut-ins.

Our aging community has been increasing the demand for ECHHO’s services by about 30% each year.

Meet Mac, one of ECHHO’s care receivers who was loaned a motorized scooter just prior to the Rhody parade. Mac was so excited about receiving the scooter that he insisted on driving it to his home which is near the ECHHO office.  He did so with his family escorting him from behind in their truck. In the past 15 years, Mac had missed only one Rhody parade as a member of the color guard. He was able to proudly lead this years parade carrying the POW/MIA flag on board his ECHHO scooter!

ECHHO is proud of Mac and are inspired by his “never give up” attitude! ECHHO is equally proud of all the volunteers who help make this and other life affirming stories possible!
